Benefits Realisation Map Builder

Large programmes are approved for their benefits, but benefits only happen when someone owns them and the business changes how it works. Enter your strategic objectives and benefits, with the enabler that makes each possible, the business change needed, the measure, baseline, target, date and owner. The builder draws the benefits map from enablers to objectives, writes the benefits register, shows when benefits arrive and lists what is missing before the next gate.

Who it is for

  • Programme directors and sponsors
  • PMOs and benefits managers
  • Business case writers and economists
  • Government delivery units and donors' results teams

What you get

  • A benefits map: enabler, business change, benefit, objective
  • A benefits register with measures, baselines, targets and owners
  • A timeline of when benefits arrive
  • A completeness check and a dis-benefits list

How this tool works

Built on
Benefits management practice from the IPA guide for major projects, the Green Book, APM Body of Knowledge and ISO 21502: benefits linked through business changes and enablers to objectives, each with a measure and an owner.
Scoring
The score is the share of filled required fields across all benefits (enabler, business change, objective, measure, baseline, target, date and owner).
Limitations
The map shows logic and ownership, not whether the targets are realistic.
Your data
What you type stays in your browser unless you save it to a free account. We receive your name, email and summary only when you open your results.

Questions

What is the difference between an output and a benefit?

An output is what the programme delivers (a road, a system). A benefit is the measurable improvement someone gains when the output is used, often only after the business changes how it works.

Why include dis-benefits?

Some groups will be worse off (for example longer routes during works or tolls). Recording them openly lets you manage them and keeps the business case honest.

Who should own a benefit?

A senior person in the organisation that will operate the asset or service, because benefits are realised after the programme hands over.
