Coaching Skills Self-Assessment

Coaching is one of the fastest ways to build capacity in a team: instead of giving answers, the manager or coach helps people think, decide and learn on the job. Many managers believe they coach while in fact they mostly advise. This self-assessment looks at six coaching skills: building trust and agreeing the purpose, listening, asking powerful questions, setting goals and following up, giving feedback, and keeping good ethics and boundaries. Rate 24 statements about your recent conversations and get a short development plan.

How this tool works

Built on
Six coaching skill areas common to established coaching practice, written by Risalat for managers in public agencies, projects and companies.
Scoring
Each answer scores from 0 (not in place) to 4 (fully in place). An area's score is the points earned as a share of the maximum for the questions you answered; the overall score is the average of the areas. Bands: Mostly advising 0–39%, Coaching in progress 40–69%, Coaching culture 70–100%.
Limitations
Results depend on the information you enter and are not verified by Risalat. This tool does not replace MAPS, PEFA, World Bank or other formal assessment methodologies, or an independent review.
Your data
What you type stays in your browser unless you save it to a free account. We receive your name, email and summary only when you open your results.

Team or organisation
With a free account you can invite colleagues from each department to answer the same questions. You get a consolidated dashboard: scores by area and department, where colleagues disagree, priority gaps and an action plan. Anonymous mode hides names and groups departments with fewer than 3 responses.

Questions

Do I need to be a professional coach?

No. It is written for managers, team leaders and internal coaches who want to coach their people as part of their job.

What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?

A mentor mostly shares experience and advice. A coach mostly asks questions and helps the person find their own answers. Good managers use both and say which one they are doing.

How often should I repeat the assessment?

Every three to six months, or after a course, to see whether your habits are changing.
