Interface and Integration Risk Register

On multi-contractor programmes, many delays and claims start at the boundaries: one contractor waits for another's design data, access or connection. List each interface between two parties with its type, need date, status, likelihood, impact and owner. The register draws an interface matrix, rates and sorts the open interfaces, flags overdue and disputed items, shows which parties carry most exposure and gives the actions for your next interface meeting.

  • 12 min
  • Free
  • Sources checked November 2026

Who it is for

  • Programme integration and interface managers
  • PMOs and owner's engineers
  • Systems integration teams (rail, metro, utilities, smart cities)
  • PIUs with several works contracts on one site

What you get

  • An interface matrix between all parties
  • Risk ratings and the highest open interfaces
  • Overdue, disputed and undefined interfaces
  • Exposure by party
  • Actions for the next interface meeting
  • CSV export of the register

How this tool works

Built on
Interface management practice from systems engineering (ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, INCOSE) and major programme guidance (ISO 21502, APM Body of Knowledge).
Scoring
Rating is likelihood x impact (1 to 25). The score is the share of interfaces that are agreed, or defined with an owner.
Limitations
A register is only as good as its last update: review it at every interface meeting.
Your data
What you type stays in your browser unless you save it to a free account. We receive your name, email and summary only when you open your results.

Questions

What is an interface?

A point where the work, information or systems of two parties must fit together: physical (a connection), functional (one system relies on another), data, contractual, organisational, schedule or regulatory.

Who should own an interface?

Usually the party that needs the input, with the owner's integration team as referee. Every interface needs one named owner.

Can I import my existing register?

Use Load to open a saved file, or copy rows in; the CSV button exports the register for Excel.

A guidance tool, not a formal assessment, audit or legal opinion. Your contracts, the financier's policies and national law always take precedence.
