Program Introduction

Agriculture is one of the very first industries heavily affected by climate change. Extreme weather events, changing rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and a rapid spread of pests and diseases pose substantial challenges to the industry’s productivity and resilience. In addition, global population growth and increased urbanization only keep straining existing food systems. Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) takes a multidimensional approach focusing on those systems and practices that can boost productivity and enhance food security while preserving natural resources and minimizing GHG emissions.

This workshop has been exclusively developed by Risalat to help its delegates capture synergies between climate risk mitigation, adaptation, and food security. The program in Rotterdam provides fundamental CSA knowledge and skills for those willing to undergo a transformation both within agricultural value chains and at different policy levels.

Target Audience

The program is aimed at:

  • Policymakers
  • The staff of Agriculture Ministries
  • Development practitioners
  • Development project/program planners and managers
  • Agriculture sectoral specialists
  • Those willing to transform traditional agricultural practices into climate-smart ones

Program Objectives

Program participants will have a unique opportunity to get involved in a dialogue on climate-smart transformation and learn about the best practices and challenges associated with the process.

Program Methodology

The program is centered on practical skills development and knowledge enhancement in selected CSA areas. The presentation, exercises, simulations, case studies, and discussion questions are explicitly tailored to those working on climate-smart applications of agricultural practices.

Proven adult-learning methodology and principles guide the entire process intending to maximize the effectiveness of the delivery and create a long-lasting impact. Practical exposure and panel discussions target the development of real-life capabilities essential to driving a broader transition to CSA practices.

Host Country Profile

The Netherlands has climate-smart and sustainable farming high on its national agenda. The country has been playing a key role in searching for and developing innovative CSA technologies. The Dutch approach includes intensive cooperation between the private sector, scientific institutes, and the government. For decades, they have been at the forefront of agriculture as innovators, producers, and exporters of knowledge, technology, and food.

Innovations in arable farming, livestock farming, and aquaculture cover many subjects. These include smart farming using IoT, Big Data, AI, and robotics. Through tech applications, many enterprises have managed to increase yields, enhance animal welfare, and improve food quality and security, in addition to lowering the overall cost and ecological footprint of the agriculture sector.
