Program Introduction

Global investments in clean energy transition have expanded, reaching a record high of US$ 1.3 trillion in 2022. Despite such an uptake, these investments are insufficient to put the world on track toward meeting climate goals. According to IRENA, annual investments must quadruple to bridge the gap. One of the main barriers to the widespread use of clean energy is high upfront costs. As public and concessional sources are scarce, renewable energy project finance calls for the active engagement of the private sector.

RET projects require a sophisticated understanding of financial modeling, risk mitigation, and credit enhancement mechanisms. Renewable Energy Technology (RET) Project Development and Finance Training in Riga provides a strategic framework for understanding different business models, financing instruments, and deal structures specific to renewable energy projects. It also covers critical contractual provisions and documents throughout the project development process.

Host Country Profile

Latvia has substantial hydroelectric capacity. Therefore, the country has a green energy supply on a high agenda. About 40% of the nation’s electricity comes from clean energy sources. Latvia aims to raise this bar to 50% by 2030, following the EU’s National Energy and Climate Action Plan.

As much of the country’s heat and electricity still owes to imported natural gas, the Latvian government works with the private sector to supplement hydropower with biomass and wind power plant projects.
